Science

A clear, sequential curriculum is used to develop a strong knowledge of science that allows pupils to understand the world around them. Using progressive teaching of science models and concepts, pupils will develop a conceptual understanding of science and link knowledge across the curriculum topics.  Blended learning supports knowledge and learning across different topics. They will learn connected substantive knowledge and work scientifically to develop their disciplinary knowledge. Clear teaching of vocabulary, using a range of enquiry types and dual objectives support the development of knowledge and skills.

At Greenland, we aim to promote a love for science throughout school. We use special visitors, such as ‘Mad Scientists’, to deliver workshops that teach children about science topics in fun and engaging ways. In lessons we discuss the work and careers of famous scientists. Teachers also get the opportunity to discuss their favourite scientist! When appropriate, current developments in the world of science are covered in addition to the curriculum requirements. Every year, we hold a ‘Science Week’ that usually coincides with British Science Week. This is used to promote a curiosity for science, teach pupils about scientific topics and complete investigations. Also, pupils visit local businesses to observe scientists in the real world, providing an insight into STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) careers. Finally, pupils may take part in educational visits to local venues, providers or attractions that also teach them about science-related topics.
