Careers Lead for Greenland and SLP Trust: Mrs Bullough

Our vision at Greenland begins with the belief that every child should be aspirational, with ‘Aspirations Without Limits’ at the heart of our approach. We want children to see a path beyond education, understand that careers can change and develop over time and have the knowledge and skills to shape their future. We recognise that aspirations begin early, with children aged 3 and 4 beginning to form ideas about jobs. Between the ages of 5 and 7, these aspirations can narrow due to stereotypes around gender, race, background and perceived ability and by age 10, children may already begin ruling out future pathways. By starting early, we aim to broaden horizons, challenge stereotypes and ensure every child sees the opportunities available to them.
Trust Careers Curriculum Drivers
At SLP Trust, we are committed to delivering a consistent and high-quality careers curriculum across all of our schools. We aim to ensure every child leaves SLP Trust with the knowledge, skills and confidence to achieve their aspirations and succeed in the career and life they choose. To reflect the unique context of each school and community, careers learning is shaped by the curriculum drivers outlined below.

North East Ambition
We work in partnership with North East Ambition to support high-quality, inclusive careers education and raise aspirations for all pupils. Through this partnership, we strengthen links with employers and the wider community, helping children explore future opportunities and broaden their horizons. We use the Primary Gatsby Benchmarks to review and develop our careers provision and benefit from training, networking opportunities and a range of careers resources to support our curriculum and careers strategy.

As part of our careers curriculum we:

-
Promote the understanding that careers are fluid and can change throughout a person's life, encouraging children to see career pathways as flexible journeys shaped by their interests, skills and experiences.
-
Link careers to each unit of work so children can see how their learning connects to future careers.
-
Explore a range of careers, challenge gender stereotypes, and celebrate inspirational figures through our selection of reading books. As reading is at the heart of our curriculum, these texts help broaden aspirations and encourage children to see the opportunities available to them.
-
Enhance our Science curriculum by introducing children to a wide range of STEM careers from EYFS.
-
Plan employer encounters and educational visits to help children learn about careers through real-life experiences.
-
Track careers education across the school to identify strengths, address gaps and improve future planning of our careers curriculum.
-
Adapt our curriculum to incorporate links to regional labour market information, helping children develop an awareness of local industries, employment opportunities and potential future career pathways.
-
Through regular assemblies and career spotlights, children are introduced to a wide range of jobs and industries while developing the eight essential Skills Builder skills, helping them build the confidence, resilience and transferable skills needed for their future education and careers.
-
Plan transition activities which focus on children reflecting on their careers journey

Inclusion – Careers curriculum for all
Our careers curriculum provides pupils with SEND with meaningful opportunities to explore their future choices and aspirations. Through appropriate adaptations and scaffolding, we ensure all pupils can access careers learning while maintaining high expectations and challenging stereotypes. Aspirations are linked to individual SEN plans, with the Preparing for Adulthood Toolkit used to set SMART targets that support future goals.
Skills Builder
The Skills Builder Universal Framework provides a consistent approach to developing the eight essential transferable skills, helping children become more confident, independent and resilient. Embedded throughout our curriculum and careers education, it enables pupils to recognise their strengths, understand how skills link to future careers and make informed choices about their aspirations. We also track and monitor skill development across the school to identify strengths, support areas for growth and inform future curriculum planning.
